THAILAND | At Hilton Sukhumvit, a Bangkok Staycation
Friday, July 07, 2017Tired and grimy, we slumped on the soft outdoor benches of Hilton’s executive lounge with cold bottles of Chang and plates of sushi on our table. In dusty trek pants and shoes, in total opposite to the impeccably dressed guests at the lounge, we sipped our beer like we were wearing fancy tuxedos and dresses.
We’re finally in Bangkok and we’re here only for one thing. Staycation.
CHECKING IN AT HILTON SUKHUMVIT IN BANGKOK |
We departed for Bangkok early that same day, taking an hour to find a songthaew in front of Boonya Resort in Koh Chang and another thirty minutes for it to bring us to the port. The ferry crossing and the ride to the bus depot took an hour-and-a-half, and then the long bus ride to Bangkok. It was almost five in the afternoon when we arrived at Hilton Sukhumvit—just in time for their free cocktail hour!
THE EXECUTIVE LOUNGE, TOO SWANKY FOR US |
We haven’t even seen our room yet. Their staff saw to our backpacks, and we were herded straight to platters of gourmet food and buckets of alcohol. Tired as we were, who were we to say no?
FREE AFTERNOON SNACK |
After downing a few bottles of Chang, it was finally time to check our room to relax and stretch a bit. And tired as we were, we can’t help but be energized back to life after opening the door to our home for four days. Since we were checked in at Hilton, we knew we’d have a topnotch room, but still, it was another thing to actually see an excellently appointed room after weeks of roughing it out on parts of Cambodia and Thailand.
OUR ROOM FOR THREE NIGHTS |
We were billeted at the King Junior Suite, located at the higher floors of the hotel [CHECK DISCOUNTED RATES & AVAILABILITY]. The interiors were slickly designed, walls in glass—one of which overlooks the sparkling metropolis of the capital, another with a view of the lavish toilet and bath, and the last, backed by a textured wall, giving it a polished luxurious look.
LOVELY TOILET AND BATH |
An inviting queen-sized bed sits on one end, surrounded by two leather sofas and a marble table. Our room also has a spacious wooden work table, perfect for quick updates on our blog and transferring massive amounts of photos from our cameras.
THE GLITZY BANGKOK SKYLINE |
Still full from our snack at the executive lounge, we snoozed early that night, forgetting about dinner and even Khao San Road (we skipped it, can you imagine!?). We wanted nothing but a soft comfy bed to lie on, and boy did we have one that night.
ITALIAN AMERICAN-INSPIRED LOBBY, NOTICE THE VOLUPTOUS FIGURES? |
PERFECT PLACE TO LOUNGE WHILE WAITING FOR OUR TOUR VAN |
Much as we wanted to wake up late, we have a Kanchanaburi Day Tour [BOOK THE TOUR ONLINE] the following day. So early we woke, holding take-aways from the restaurant for breakfast, lounging around the swanky Italian Amerian-styled lobby while we waited for our tour van.
RIDING THE DEATH RAIL IN KANCHANABURI |
It was a busy day for us, running from memorials to museums, from railways to riversides, from scenic rafts rides to a much more scenic railway ride on the so-called Death Railway. We were bushed and it was fully dark by the time we returned to the hotel. “I thought we went to Bangkok for a staycation!?” I asked my constant companion. A quick dinner on the numerous hawkers along Sukhumvit and we’re back on our comfy bed, snoring up to high heavens.
THE SCALINI ITALIAN RESTAURANT AT THE SECOND FLOOR OF HILTON |
LOOKING FOR BACONS |
BACONS, FOUND |
We woke late the next morning (finally!) and headed straight to the Scalini Restaurant at the second floor of the hotel for breakfast. Bacons (finally!) abound, and we feasted like there was no tomorrow, taking in a few servings of scrambled eggs, fried rice and some sausages.
SHOPPING AT CHATUCHAK WEEKEND MARKET |
It was a Sunday, and weekends at Bangkok means market day at its biggest shopping area, Chatuchak. With all the bacons we ate, we were raring to burn all that calories, so off we went to the weekend market, taking the long way by boarding local buses instead of the city train—which was just a hop away from Hilton, actually.
BAGS AND MORE! |
It was our first time in Chatuchak and we were just overwhelmed with the number of things to burn our bahts on! It took us most of the day browsing through, I think, not even half of the place and came home with bagfuls of shirts, uhmm, bags, and whatnots.
AT THE ROOFTOP INFINITY POOL |
Again, we arrived back at Hilton Sukhumvit just as the cocktail hour was starting! Perfect timing, eh? Lol. As if that wasn’t enough, after freshening up a bit and checking out the infinity pool at the roof deck, we went down to the Scalini Restaurant, which is a hi-so Italian restaurant, by the way, for a night of fine dining.
SEABASS, LEMON BUTTER SAUCE |
SEAFOOD SPAGHETTI PASTA |
RIBEYE 14 OZ. |
SCALINI TIRAMISU |
Like royalties, we dined on Sea Scallops, Sichuan Black Peppered Pork Belly, and Seabass in Lemon Butter Sauce, before having a 14 oz. Ribeye Medium Rare Steak and Seafood Spaghetti Pasta for the main course—with, of course, swirls of wine in between. Everything was superbly delicious, but the steak was more than that. It was heaven. We topped the evening with a bowl of Scalini Tiramisu, prepared right before us, and eaten much quicker than its preparation.
At last, this is what I call a staycation!
