The next stop on our Corregidor Day Tour was a shrine funded by a Japanese group that is ironically dedicated to the Filipino, American and Japanese soldiers killed on the island during the Second World War. 

Similar to the Filipino Heroes Memorial, it is also located on the tailside of the island. It features various grave markers with Japanese inscriptions. But this is actually not a cemetery. No soldier, Japanese or otherwise, is really buried in its ground; it is more of a praying area for the Japanese families whose kins died during the war.

Anti aircraft guns line up the hill’s edge, looking out into the sea, and a towering Buddha monument stands at the far end of the park along a pond. It is said that the stone sculpture acts as a fertility idol and not a few visit the island just to touch it in the hopes of bearing a child.

Some souvenir shops can also be found within its vicinity with curious items like old Filipino, American and Japanese currencies and photographs.

It was actually quite interesting to find such a park in Corregidor, being that the Japanese were in reality the ones who attacked the island. I guess this symbolizes the peace and friendship that now extends between the two countries.
