PUBLISHED | Lonely Planet’s The Perfect Trip: Holland
Thursday, March 22, 2012A few months ago, my Intramuros photographs made it into the pages of Lonely Planet Philippines Magazine and I almost jumped through the roof. As a leading name in travel literature, to be part of the magazine was a big deal for me.
On Lonely Planet’s latest issue, not only did I get to be featured inside its pages, I also got to be featured outside. I made the cover of Lonely Planet Magazine, my very first magazine cover actually!
The cover image was the result of a frustrating driving tour through the massive dams of Volendam. Since we were unable to really shoot through the long drive, we decided to take a chance and check out the small fishing village of Urk. It turned out to be a good decision as the place was really really picturesque!
The gorgeous lighthouse was photographed from the town’s lower bank, near the sea. I waited as Eli Van Ingen (KLM Ambassador and gracious host) completed the essential human element found in most Lonely Planet covers before I clicked the shutter.
Months after our seven-day journey in the land of tulips and windmills, the fruit of our hard work (hard work?!) had finally borne fruit. I proudly present to you, this month’s Lonely Planet offering, The Perfect Trip: Holland!
The 13-page feature written by Dariel Quiogue based on our experiences in the Netherlands gives an overview of the country, tackling the major cities we covered; the Hague, Volendam, Urk, Rotterdam, Leiden and Amsterdam. The accompanying photos were of course taken by yours truly in tandem with Joel H. Garcia. Reading the feature transported me back to those seven hardcore days we spent in Holland. With an average of four hours of sleep, we did non-stop walks in zero temperature through the beautiful cities of the Netherlands. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and everything would not have been possible without our sponsors. KLM, Digital Photographer Philippines, Sony, Phottix, JT Photoworld and Lonely Planet, a big big thank you!
In addition to the feature, I also got to contribute a mini article in their Ask the Experts section. It’s really just a small one regarding the safety of travelling in the Philippines.
Okay, so my photo on a magazine cover checked! My photo on a Lonely Planet cover, super checked! Lonely Planet’s The Perfect Trip: Holland is now available in bookstores nationwide, do grab some copies!
