SINGAPORE | Lunch at Sentosa’s Tastes of Asia
Monday, January 28, 2013Everyone was excited at the prospect of visiting Sentosa, Singapore’s premiere island resort. The group was voting on our activity for the day, would it be the Luge or the 4D Magix. But no matter what our votes were, it seems the heavens have other plans for us.
Thick rainclouds converged on our heads as we walked towards our lunch, we’re gonna have an Asian feast at Sentosa’s Tastes of Asia. Located on the northern end of the island, we walked through a long causeway before reaching the restaurant’s entrance. The rain promptly let loose the moment we went inside.
We scanned Tastes of Asia’s menu as the heavens wept outside. The menu certainly lived up to the restaurant’s name; it was cleanly categorized by Asian countries. They have selections for Indonesian dishes, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian and Singaporean. I scanned the menu from cover to cover, no Philippine cuisines.
Our drinks arrived while waiting for our orders. Everyone tried their Asian’s Favourites; home made iced lemongrass & ginger tea, bandung, iced cucumber and iced lemon tea. The drinks were served in huge glass jar-like mugs that looked really nice.
The dishes arrived soon. First was R of The Traveling Dork’s Singapore laksa, which is rice noodles with prawns, fish cake, taupok and bean sprouts in spicy coconut broth with dried shrimp chili paste. Now I wouldn’t have known all that if not for their menu, so cheers to Tastes of Asia’s creating a very detailed one.
Next was J of Jaytography’s beef rendang with ginger flower. Now this one I know, I have tasted a similar dish in Blue Ginger. The cuisine is made from very tender chunks of beef, slow cooked in spices and gravy, and garnished with fried grated coconut. J was kind enough to let us have a taste since it was too spicy for him. I find it to be really tender and flavorful, superb!
V of Lakbay Baguio’s dish arrived next; he ordered Thai spicy fried rice with prawns and chicken. The serving size looks a bit disappointing since we can only spot a few small prawns scattered within the wok fried Thai rice. The serving size was so petite that I didn’t ask for a portion to taste anymore.
My order arrived last, stir-fried prawns with celery and chilies. Similar to V’s order, I found it to be a bit wanting in size and led me to order a cup of rice to pair it with. Flavor-wise, it was very good with its spicy and creamy coconut sauce; I’m just wondering where the supposedly “large” prawns were in the dish.
Our dining experience at Sentosa’s Tastes of Asia received mixed reactions from our group; the food was excellent but most found their serving portions too small and serving time too long. If I was to eat here again though, I would definitely order R’s choice of Singapore laksa. Not only is its serving size colossal but it was excellently flavored as well; my mouth waters just recalling how good it tasted.

I actually don't believe the "large" part of large prawns on a menu anymore. Haha. But the dish still looks yum. One thing I certainly love to do in SG is to pig out!
