We have exactly two nights in Kuala Lumpur for our whole two-month ASEAN Summer Loop trip and we wanted to make the most out of it. For us, that means having mee goreng, our all-time favorite noodle dish from Malaysia, every other hour.

How addicted are we with mee goreng? After checking in at the Traders Hotel KL and freshening up a bit, we headed out by midnight to hunt for one.

The next day, we rose early, eager to head over to Jalan Alor food street, excited to have a plate of our favorite noodles from one of the stalls that serves the meanest mee goreng in the whole of KL. But our plans suddenly took a turn as my travel mate got a message that her aunt was also in the city. Jalan Alor got ditched and we met up with her at the Pavilion Shopping Center instead.

After a bit of looking around, she asked us what we wanted for lunch. Well, we all know the answer to that burning question.

THE PLACE WAS PACKED WITH PATRONS

Since the streets of Kuala Lumpur were steaming like an open-aired sauna, we decided to hunt for our fave stir-fried noodles in the comfort of the air-conditioned mall—we’re tourists like that. It didn’t take long before we found what we were looking for at Madam Kwan’s, which as their tagline says, has truly Malaysian cuisine.

The place was packed with locals, which is a good barometer of a restaurant serving good food. The interiors were stylish and people seemed to be enjoying their food.

As we were about to enter, a woman greeted us in Filipino, hello there kababayan!

Madam Kwan is actually a real person. How real? We actually saw her in the restaurant, smiling and observing her patrons. She looks quite sweet, like how your grandmother looks sweet. We later found out that she’s been serving these dishes since 1977. Spell legit.

TE TAREK VERSUS BLACK JELLY ICE, I DIG THE TEA MORE

We quickly went through their menu and spotted our query on our first page flip. Well, sort of.

There was a mee goreng-looking dish there but it was listed as Fried Noodles Hokkien Style (18.90 MYR), we ordered it anyways since mee goreng actually means fried noodles. We were three in the group, so we ordered a few more food; Curry Laksa (15.90 MYR), Malaysian Satay (4.90 MYR), and to cap everything off, glasses of Te Tarek or Malaysian sweetened milk tea (5.50 MRY) and Black Jelly Ice (6.00 MYR).

IF IT LOOKS LIKE MEE GORENG, IT MUST BE MEE GORENG

Prices were on the steep side, but once our orders arrived, we saw that it was justified; the serving size was good enough for two persons. Service was quite decent too; food was on the table in no time, considering how packed the place was.

The noodles, which looks and tastes like mee goreng, was just okay. Their satay were quite meaty, but still very tender. It was served with cubed rice, slices of fruits and of course, peanut gravy. It was quite good; everyone on the table actually liked it.

SPICY CURRY LAKSA FOR THE WIN

But the star of the show for me was the curry laksa. I love how spicy and flavorful it was! I also love the huge portions of fried bean curd that goes along with it. My companions, however, were having a hard time with it as it was too spicy for their taste.

Which is actually super fine with me; I can have the whole two-person bowl all to my selfish self. Haha. Now, if they can only match Jalan Alor’s mee goreng…
