The view from our motorbike on the way back to the land split from Pam Bok Waterfall was very scenic. But we were so hell-bent on finally having a meal that we didn’t even stop for a single photograph until we saw the yellow sign indicating we finally made it for lunch without blacking out from starvation.

The owner of the Pai Land Split welcomed us with a smile as we entered his gate. He immediately offered us crispy banana chips, peanuts, potatoes, and fresh papaya with roselle jam. He asked us if we wanted to try his home-made juice too, which was also made from roselle flowers.

We can only thank him with ultra-wide smiles. Everything was surprisingly good, and that’s something coming from me who really don’t dig these kinds of food. But the best part of it was, there’s no price for everything, he only asks for donation and you give what you feel is due. Wow.

QUICK HIKE TO THE LAND SPLIT

With our hunger satiated, we finally hiked up the short sloping trail to the land split. Posted in Thai-glish near the café, it is said that the split appeared in 2008. There were no earthquakes at the time, there were no floods—the land simply cracked one morning. The initial gap was about two meters wide with a depth of eleven meters.

A SPLIT IN THE LAND

Devastated on what happened to his land, which the owner was using as a farm back then, he decided on selling it. Problem was, with his land split in two, no one wants it. He decided then to open his place to tourists passing through on their way to Pam Bok Falls. The rest, as they say, is history.

PAI SPLIT MARKERS BY YEAR

The land has since been moving, with signs posted along the split by year. It was quite shallow on some areas, but pretty deep on others. A makeshift rail made from tree branches were the only thing that separates visitors with the crevice, so we took special care in where we put our foot down on the area.

CAREFUL NOT TO FALL THROUGH THE GAP

The land split goes on for several meters. It isn’t as breathtaking as the neighboring Pai Canyon, but it is a nice enough stop-over when visiting the Pam Bok waterfalls. And it is a particularly good stop when you’re about to pass out from starvation, they do serve some mean snacks.
