Our room was already dark when pangs of hunger woke me up. We arrived in Chiang Rai some hours before, but we were too tired to explore the city; besides, Chayadol Boutique Resort’s bed seemed too inviting. We gave in, our planned quick nap blooming into a full-blown snoring concierto. Now fully awake, I took a peek outside and saw the translucent glimmer of the lighted pool below. I was, again, torn. do I swim or find some chow?

PINKS AND SWIRLS AT CHAYADOL’S RECEIVING AREA

Chayadol Boutique Resort is small three-star, modern-styled boutique hotel located about two kilometers away from the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, the city’s town center. From the old bus station where we were dropped from our ride in Chiang Mai, we rented a tuktuk to bring us to the resort—a couple of kilometers seemed nothing if you have no bags with you, but us, we were hefting quite a bit of luggage. The place is, honestly, quite a ways off from downtown. Good thing they have free bikes for guests, and motorcycles to rent out.

GOING TO THE LOBBY

The first thing that would greet visitors upon arrival is their pool. To get to the reception area, one has to cross a bridge-like path that divides the adult and children’s lap area. It was quite cool, actually. Off to the left are the accommodations which have balconies opening up to the swimming pool.

We were booked on their Deluxe Twin Room, we opted for their queen-sized bed instead of the two single-bed. Our room was spaced just right, not too big, but not too small either. Equipped with flatscreen TV, air-conditioning, a work desk, cabinets, mini-bar, free Wi-Fi, and coffee-making facilities, we have everything we needed for our three-day jaunt in Chiang Rai.

Toilet and bath were quite modern and very clean. There’s a hot shower and toiletries on dispensers.

THE SWIMMING POOL FROM OUR BALCONY

But more than anything else, the balcony is the best feature of Chayadol’s Deluxe Room. It opens directly to the pool below, and beyond, you can see the mountains of Chiang Rai. Although we were booked on the second floor of the hotel, I can’t help but wish that the balconies on the ground floor have direct access to the pool instead of going all the way out through the corridor if you wanted to swim.

BOOKS FOR GUESTS, BUT THEY’RE IN THAI

Chayadol Resort has an in-house café with an al fresco area. We only chanced upon it as we were about to get the free bikes for our Chiang Rai temple run, it was disconnected from the hotel area by a structure which I presume to be the hotel owner’s home. We were unable to eat at their café though, since we have some canned food from our friends in Chiang Mai.

BUFFET BREAKFAST PLACE

We, however, were able to try their free breakfast buffet the next day which is located on the second floor restaurant. Since Chayadol is a boutique resort, it was expected that their selection is a bit limited. I was quite happy though as they have fried rice, sausages, eggs, and ham. I’m easy to please like that.
