MALAYSIA | Century Helang Langkawi ~ a Quick Break at the Airport
Tuesday, May 17, 2016It was our last few hours in Langkawi and before boarding the plane to Penang, we dropped by the Century Helang Hotel—one of the sister hotels of Century Beach Langkawi Resort—for our final Langkawian lunch. It’s been seven days since we set foot on the island and this can’t be a more fitting send-off before we launch to the next leg of the Beach Hop Asia 2016 tour.
Century Helang is located near the airport, like three minutes by foot away from it. Their in-house restaurant was the perfect place to have lunch and lounge around before leaving Langkawi.

While waiting for our meal, we were toured around the hotel. With a total of 218 rooms, it is huge—heck, even the hallways are super spacious! I like how unique their rooms are, using dark glazed stone instead of wood or carpet for floorings. These are, of course, set over with beautiful rugs for comfort.

THE RESTAURANT OVERLOOKING THE POOL |
Our food was waiting for us as we got back down to their restaurant; mee mamak, Crazy Goreng, and black pepper chicken. They almost have the same menu as Century Langkasuka, except for a select few—house specialties, we were told.
MEE MAMAK ~ MYR30.00 |
The mee mamak is very similar to our favorite mee goreng, which was precisely why I ordered it. I tried asking, for the nth time, the difference between these two, but I can’t seem to get it except for the name; mamak in Malay refers to a group of people in Malaysia with Tamil Muslim origins. How it affects our mee goreng, I have still yet to find out; the two tasted the same to me, which is the important thing, lol.
CRAZY GORENG ~ MYR30.00 |
Crazy Goreng on the other hand is Century Helang’s version of, I guess, nasi goreng. Only instead of only fried rice, it is also served with sticks of chicken satay lathered in peanut sauce, fried egg, prawns, keropuk (fried crispy flakes), and veggies. And as with the name, everything’s crazy spicy.
BLACK PEPPER CHICKEN ~ |
Our final order is a bit of a surprise. I originally thought that their black pepper chicken is a local Sarawak dish due to the pepper part, but it turned out to be a western dish. Well, the pepper used is indeed from Sarawak, but everything else is western inspired. The surprising part though was how superb it was! From the succulent meat of the chicken, the thick gravy, the crispy fries and the flavorful veggies. It easily won favors from us!
Again, as with Century Langkasuka, the serving size of each dish was very generous, good enough for sharing. But since we still have a flight ahead of us, we were able to finish everything off!
It was the low-season when we visited Century Helang so there were only a few guests within the hotel. This worked for us very well; after our filling meal, we were invited by the manager to get our bags and use one of the vacant rooms upstairs while waiting for our flight. We cannot be more enthusiastic about hefting our backpacks and resting on one their comfy rooms. Thank you so much Century Helang!
