NEGROS ORIENTAL | Massive Munchies at Dumaguete City
Monday, August 08, 2016I love hotdog sandwiches. You won’t ever hear me complaining on plain ones, with a simple zag of mayo on top and a sprinkle of cheese. Heck, even a fried Tender Juicy in between a soft pandesal is good enough for me. On this last visit to Dumaguete, you can just imagine how my eyes popped when Massive Munchies prepared a hotdog for me—with pickles, spicy jalapeños, crispy fries, and lots and lots of cheese.
COOL GRAFFITI ON THE WALLS |
Coming from our Siquijor trip, we saw Massive Munchies on our first night in Dumaguete. Their store design was quite intriguing so we took a peek right after having our fill of BellyChon from Qu4dros Grill, it sits just right across the street. We promised we’d be back the next day.
And indeed, after trying out Dumaguete’s painitan the next morning, we trooped over to Locsin Street with our backpacks on (again) for our final meal in the city before flying back to Manila.
MASSIVE MUNCHIES’ MASSIVE BLACKBOARD |
Massive Munchies is a relatively new hole-in-the-wall restaurant in the city. From its cool interior, we immediately surmised that it is operated by a young entrepreneur. On one side is your typical service bar counter, and on the right, plastic Orocan seats set before a massive blackboard-like murals of pop culture icons; Godzilla, Star Wars, Bruce Lee, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, among others.
CHALKED MENU |
While the artwork really appealed to me, what really drew us here were their outrageously low-priced pocket pies plastered on their storefront. Well, that was before we saw its actual size, which, I guess, matches its PHP25.00 to PHP40.00 tags.
POCKET PIES, GOOD BUT NOT TOO FILLING ~ FROM PHP25.00 |
These are quite similar to McDonald’s peach mango pies (about twice its size) except there’s no mango here, everything’s all about meat. Suits me just fine!
We ordered a couple of these, their Cheesy Hungarian and Hot Mexican Taco, particularly. And since, as implied, the serving is pocket-sized, we also asked for their Cheesy Jalapeno Dog and their Big Dog sandwiches. And errr, for safety net, a serving of Messy Taco too.
HUNGRY AS GODZILLA? |
Alright, we weren’t really that hungry but since everything is priced quite cheap compared to similar ones in Manila, we might as well have ourselves a food binge!
Our lunch was prepared right in front of us and we were licking our lips as we watched and took photos of ate while she does her thing. Serving time is understandably on the slow side since she was the only one manning the mini-kitchen. Granted, we were the only customer at the time, I can just imagine how things would be if the place becomes packed.
LEMONADE & FOUR SEASONS ON MASON JARS ~ FROM PHP25.00 |
But true love, indeed, comes for those who wait. Everything we ordered looked smashingly delicious. From the overloaded hotdog sandwiches, to the taco and, okay—the pocket pies looked quite ordinary. But the hotdogs! Oh yeah, I’ve said that already, but man, the hotdogs!
CHEESY JALAPENO DOG ~ PHP60.00 |
We started with the pies. The flavors were interesting and they’re actually good enough for light snacks. Good thing we added those massive hotdogs, yeah? And yes, Big Munchies’ hotdogs are superlatively good, especially their Cheesy Jalapeno Dog. It has just the right amount of toppings and what-nots with a heavy dash of spiciness. I absolutely love it.
DECONSTRUCTING THE BIG DOG ~ PHP80.00 |
The Big Dog, which looked really good, unfortunately, was just too much for me. The fries overpowered the meat, so much so that we had to take it out and eat it like normal French fries. It tasted better after that little operation. And yes, it was an absolute mess to eat too, lol.
MESSY TACO ~ PHP55.00 |
The Messy Taco, a mix of chopped veggies, beef, and bacon marinated in spicy gochajung sauce and lathered with mayonnaise on a buttered tortilla shell, got nothing but praises. While I’m not really into such, my buddy was raving mad about it. Okay, it is quite good, coming from a non-taco person like me.
THE PROPER NON-MESSY WAY TO EAT MASSIVE MUNCHIES’ HOTDOGS |
Overall, we had a good time at Massive Munchies—definitely proving that the Dumaguete food scene is not only about sans rival and silvanas. The pocket pies may not have lived up to the restaurant’s name, but their hotdog sandwiches surely did; definitely one of the foodie places one should check out when in Dumaguete.
