THAILAND | Soontreeya Lanta Boutique Resort at Koh Lanta
Thursday, June 02, 2016Every morning, we’d tell ourselves we’d swim at Soontreeya Lanta Boutique Resort’s pool. But minutes tick by and hours pass and we’d still be dry as bones, sitting comfortably at their al fresco restaurant, sipping ice cold fruit drinks and whipping away paragraphs after paragraphs of stories of the past days on our laptop.
SOONTREEYA BOUTIQUE RESORT IN KOH LANTA |
Koh Lanta was our third destination in Thailand for our Beach Hop Asia 2016 tour. After experiencing the rush of Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party and an island hopping tour of Krabi, it was finally time to chill and slow down. As the rest of the TeamRH went back to the Philippines, we transferred by van and ferry to the island of Lanta right after our brief stay in Ao Nang.
SUNDOWN AT THE GARDEN |
DUPLEX BUNGALOWS AT SOONTREEYA |
Our home for five days on the island is the Soontreeya Boutique Resort. Located near the rocky end of Koh Lanta’s Long Beach, Soontreeya is a quiet resort set with sixteen elevated bungalow-style rooms, each with its own private veranda facing a verdant central garden. On its northern side, lies its pool and open-air restaurant.
EACH BUNGALOW HAS ITS OWN PERSONAL VERANDA |
We were booked on their newer rooms. It has a cleaner, more western style compared to the more tropical-looking original ones on the resort. We entered the room via the veranda, which unfortunately gets really hot during the afternoons even with its parasols.
OUR SPACIOUS ROOM, GOOD ENOUGH FOR THREE |
FUNKY EN SUITE TOILET AND BATH |
Inside, the room is modernly contemporary; its light wood-plank floors and clean white walls offset by dark wooden furniture and a shockingly red easy chair. It has a flatscreen television (which we used on most nights watching the latest episodes of Game of Thrones and classic travel movies like The Beach—with Chang beers on the sides, of course), a closet, air-conditioning, safe, and superfast Internet Wi-Fi.
TYPICAL FREE BREAKFAST AT SOONTREEYA |
Soontreeya’s rooms are surprisingly inexpensive [CHECK RATES & AVAILABILITY], yet it still comes with complimentary breakfast. Granted, it isn’t a buffet, but their selection of International-style breakfast isn’t too bad either.
SATAY CHICKEN ~ THB150.00 |
CHICKEN COCONUT SOUP ~ THB130.00 |
BAKED RICE WITH PINEAPPLE ~ THB230.00 |
Their regular offerings of European and Thai food are superb though. We were able to try out their crisply fried chicken wings, succulent satay chicken, delectable chicken coconut soup and their baked rice with pineapple. We were especially blown away by the pineapple rice from its presentation up to our first spoonful!
THE NEARBY RELAX BAY AT KOH LANTA |
A BEACH SWING THAT DOESN’T QUITE SWING AT RELAX BAY |
The resort is walking distance away from two of Koh Lanta’s many beaches, particularly Long Beach and Relax Bay. The latter, as its name suggests, is a very relaxed beach with hardly any tourists. We went here one afternoon and simply lay on the many huts fronting its beach, singing along with the waves as C’s phone spewed out lonely tunes from Up Dharma Down.
BARS ALONG KOH LANTA’S LONG BEACH |
SOONTREEYA SUPPORTS THAILAND’S TRASH HERO EFFORTS |
But we favor Koh Lanta’s Long Beach more. We usually spend the afternoons here, simply walking along its unending cream-colored sand and eating street food along its pine-laden park, watching the locals and a few tourists by the beach, and waiting for the sun to set on the horizon.
