AKLAN | Obama Grill Boracay, Tuna Panga and More
Saturday, September 09, 2017With no Boracay itinerary, we simply ambled along the island’s beaches, swimming when the urge hit us, but most of the time, we just lounged on the sand and eat when our tummies beckoned. On one of these instances, we went inside Obama Grill. We heard they have one of the best tuna panga in Boracay, and my friends were rarin’ to sample it.
First things first, Obama Grill isn’t really Obama Grill. It’s actually Bama Grill, but since the restaurant decided to put in their circular logo—which, by the way, is very similar to Barack Obama’s sigil—people assumed that it reads as Obama. And now, they’re more known as Obama Grill, lol.
OBAMA GRILL BORACAY AT STATION ONE |
The restaurant actually fronts Station One of Boracay’s White Beach. It also has access from the main road, so one can either walk here from the beach or simply ride a tricycle if in a hurry.
COMFY AND RELAXED INTERIORS |
The interiors remind me a bit of Pancake House sans the movie posters; wooden furniture with orange leatherette cushions on plain white and cream walls. There are al fresco tables by the beach, the inner lane of which is on an elevated wooden platform, and the outer tables, right on the sand itself. These are covered overhead against the sun and rain, and there are fans should it get too hot outside.
We went for the outdoor seats, of course. Why dine at the beach if you’re gonna stay indoors.
OUTDOOR SEATS RIGHT BY THE BEACH |
Bowls of shrimp gambas, tenderloin salpicao, and plates of pancit bam-i (a Cebuano variation of pancit canton mixed with sotanghon) , baby back ribs, and what we came here for, tuna panga, were soon sliding across our table.
GAMBAS ~ PHP 490.00 |
We started with the gambas. The baby prawns, sautéed in olive oil, garlic, and chili, was absolutely delicious. The entrée came with slices of toasted garlic bread, which went really well with the spicy and garlicky dip.
TENDERLOIN SALPICAO ~ PHP 490.00 |
The tenderloin salpicao has a similar set up, although not as spicy. The meat, cubed tenderloin Angus USDA steak, was extremely tender and very flavorful, too flavorful for some of my friends, in fact. But for persons like me who doesn’t like subtleties on their meat, this is perfect.
BAM-I ~ PHP 320.00 |
BABY BACK RIBS ~ PHP 620.00 |
For the main dish, we went for their bam-i to go with the tuna panga and the ribs. The bam-i was just okay, but the tuna and the ribs were really good! The baby back ribs, which isn’t really my top choice when on restaurants, was surprisingly good. Well, it’s one of Obama Grill’s specialties. I actually liked it.
TUNA PANGA ~ PHP 440.00 |
Now for the main even, the tuna panga. Grilled and set with ginger lemon sauce, it is succulently juicy. It’s good on its own, but is even better when dipped on the spicy soy sauce or the lemon butter that comes along with it. It’s actually the first time I’ve tried this and I thought I’d hate it since I don’t like grilled fishes, but this one rocks! No icky feel and flavor at all that I associate with such dishes.
OBAMA GRILL’S TURON WITH ICE CREAM |
And to cap our Boracay beachside meal, we asked for their version of turon. We’ve been so enamored with the turon that Ruf Resto Bar serves in Ferra Hotel that we decided on trying Obama Grill’s version. Their turon is also served with ice cream lathered with a bit of choco fudge. It works pretty well, the turon, crispy and still hot, mixing with the ice cream’s coldness and flavor.
And with our food craving satiated. It’s back to the beach!

It does look like Pancake House! Haha! The story about its name was funny. Typical Pinoy. And that tuna panga does look delicious! The baby back ribs too. Yum!!
ReplyDeleteThey say it's the best tuna panga in Boracay!
DeleteThat Gambas to die for.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, the best gambas in Boracay! A bit expensive but worth every bite!
DeleteTuron with ice cream! Funny ng origin ng name ah. From Station 1 beach, gaano katagal ang walk?
ReplyDeleteObama Grill is right on Station One itself, very convenient :)
DeleteHow about yung after taste ng Tuna Panga? Di malansa? :D Masarap kumain ng fish but the after taste... ugh. Gambas! :D :D
ReplyDeleteThat's also one of the reasons why I don't like grilled fishes, but Obama's tuna panga has no fishy aftertaste at all :)
